What a Jackhammer Revealed to Me About Mat Focus For the BJJer!

Last week, I was having a meeting with some fellow computer geeks, discussing the typical things that the geeks I hang out with talk about from time-to-time that regular folks that don’t belong to our fraternity of geeks wouldn’t find interesting at all. Before we started the meeting, there was a VERY noticeable and highly disruptive jackhammer working outside the window. Each time someone walked into the room, the first comment was how distracting the noise would be and how distracting the sound coming from outside would be for us during the meeting.

Do You Skip BJJ Classes Because You’re Too Tired to Train?

A few days ago, I had an interesting discussion with a high-ranking student about whether he should go to a grappling class or not when he felt too tired to go and just wanted to go home for the night. The conversation took place because he asked my opinion as to whether I thought it was ok if he should miss the third consecutive class after being too busy at work to attend two previous training sessions. He admitted that missing the first two classes were beyond his control, but the third one was due to laziness.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Demoted Back to Taking a BJJ Basics Class?

A few weeks ago, I made a decision that some of you might find to be a little odd for a black belt to make. I decided that I needed to go become a regular student at our beginner white belt introductory classes. In other words… I demoted myself back to the basics class! I know what you’re thinking… why would a black belt need to go back to taking the beginner classes? To be honest with you, I think my basic techniques need more improvement and what better place to improve on your basics than in a BJJ class dedicated to beginners.

Are You Mentally Prepared for Combat?

Many people study martial arts and practice their moves and truly believe that they are ready to inflict harm upon another individual, including death, in defense of their own, or a loved one’s life. They believe that because they have pretended to jab someone eyes with their finger, crush their throat; dislocate their elbow like Steven Seagal, etc, they will be able to do it in a real life and death situation. Let me tell you that reality is nothing like the classroom or dojo. Shadow boxing techniques or pretending in the dojo does not prepare you for the reality of combat.

Is MMA Killing Boxing?

Over the past years MMA events like the UFC have been gaining serious ground over Boxing. Proof of that is the fact that last year UFC pay-per-view events raised more money than boxing events. Boxing promoters and TV commentators are constantly attacking MMA which proves their concern with the meteoric rising of MMA events not only in the U.S. but all over the world.
